How Long Should a Weed Tolerance Break Be?

A weed tolerance break, or a t-break, is something that many cannabis users do to reset their tolerance to weed. It’s completely temporary, and it can actually help you improve your reaction to ingesting weed and save you a bit of money while you’re at it.

A not-so-fun thing about consuming weed is that your body generally becomes a bit more resistant to the effects of cannabis the more and more you smoke it. Our bodies have an endocannabinoid system, or an ECS, which helps us regulate THC. If you’re consistently putting weed into your body, the ECS will become overwhelmed and less sensitive, leaving you to ingest even more cannabis to feel the same effects you felt with less. In a nutshell, a weed tolerance break is worth it.

How long does weed stay in your body?

Like most cannabis things, our bodies tend to react differently. Several factors can lead to cannabis staying in the system for a couple of days to an entire month. However, here’s a good rule of thumb.

  • Single-use: detected up to 3 days later
  • Moderate use (3-4 times a week):  detected 5-7 days later
  • Heavy use (every day): detected up to 30 days later

How long should a tolerance break be from weed?

Short answer: No actual “rules” for a weed tolerance break exist. A firm answer is so hard to give because cannabis affects everyone so differently. While we all have cannabinoid receptors that run around our endocannabinoid system, they still react in different ways. One thing is for sure, if you smoke too much weed, your receptors will wear down, and you’ll have to up your dose to feel the same as you felt before. But with a tolerance break, you can surely get back where you were when you first started smoking. All your body needs is a little rest, and it’ll work its magic.

The best length for a t-break is entirely dependent on how much weed you ingest daily. Once you’re prepared to take a weed tolerance break, you can decide, on your terms, what works best for you. If you smoke a considerable amount and feel like a break is something that you need, go for a few weeks or a month. On a more average scale, 21 days is the sweet spot for regular cannabis smokers. This will give your body enough time to shed cannabis from your system and regulate your ECS completely.

Here’s a rough outline of how long your tolerance break should be.

  • Casual consumers:  2 days – 1 week
  • Semi-frequent consumers:  2 or 3 weeks
  • Regular heavy consumers:  4 weeks+

You may be left asking if 24 hours is enough for a weed tolerance break, and it very well could be if you don’t smoke a ton of weed. Even then, cutting the cord for at least 48 hours is still good. The whole idea around a tolerance break is to lighten the load for your THC receptors and make it easier for yourself to get high.

How often should I take a tolerance break?

It’s a good idea to take small breaks every couple of months. This will help you develop a healthy relationship with cannabis if you don’t have one already. Taking breaks is good for you and is an excellent way to manage your tolerance and prevent accidental dependence. And the best part is if you start incorporating breaks into your cannabis routine, your endocannabinoid system will be happy with you. A happy and stabilized endocannabinoid system = less weed to get high.

If you made it this far, congrats. The good news is that a weed tolerance break is temporary, and it aids in helping you literally get higher for less money.
