How to make cannabis butter at home

Cannabis butter, or cannabutter, is a critical ingredient in most THC edibles recipes.

First thing’s first, making cannabis butter at home is not time-intensive. But paying attention throughout the process is critical. Be sure to set aside at least an hour to make your cannabis butter without too many distractions. We’d also recommend reading through this guide fully before starting to make your butter so you can see the whole process from start to finish.  And don’t forget to spend just as much time selecting the perfect flower for your particular needs. 

Ingredients you’ll need

Let’s begin with ingredients. You’ll need:

  • 1 cup of butter. We’d recommend getting your favorite brand, but keep in mind that salted butter will slightly alter the flavor of the resulting edible. Unsalted butter might be a better choice if you are making cannabis-infused butter for the first time
  • 1 cup (or in 7 and 10 g) of ground-up cannabis

The cannabis needs to be “decarboxylated” which is actually a step that a lot of first-time edible makers skip to their detriment. We’ll start there.

Step 1: Decarboxylating the weed

Decarboxylating the cannabis flower you plan to use in your cannabis-infused butter (or cannabutter) is absolutely necessary. You can’t skip this step without altering the potency of the resulting butter and changing the whole formula.

In fact, making cannabis-infused butter without decarboxylating it beforehand will result in an inactive product that doesn’t give you the high you’re looking for. This is because cannabis flower buds make a non-intoxicating cannabinoid called THCA. When you consume cannabis normally through smoking or vaporizing, the heat automatically converts the THCA into regular THC: the main cannabinoid that delivers the euphoric effects marijuana is known for.

Thus, you need to pre-heat the THCA and decarboxylate it to get the same effect in any edibles you want to create.

To decarboxylate your cannabis:

  • Preheat your oven to 245°F and place your cannabis buds on an oven-safe and nonstick tray. We’d obviously recommend getting high-quality cannabis from a licensed weed delivery service near you
  • Cover that tray with parchment paper as well to prevent the buds from sticking
  • Once the tray is in the oven, let the buds bake for between 30 and 40 minutes. If your cannabis buds are older, it might take even less time
  • Every 10 minutes or so, shake the tray likely to mix the buds and expose the buds’ surface areas a little more evenly

Step 2: Grinding the weed and melting the butter

After decarboxylating your cannabis buds, you can move on to making the butter proper. To do this, grind your decarboxylated cannabis buds with a hand grinder or a mashing tool. This could be time-consuming depending on what you have available.

Then melt the butter by adding 1 cup of butter and 1 cup of water into a pot or saucepan. Let the pot or saucepan simmer on low so that the butter melts evenly without thickening or evaporating.

We’d recommend adding at least a little water. This will stop the butter from scorching and can regulate the temperature so things don’t boil over or mess up.

Step 3: Mix cannabis and butter/water

You should then add the cannabis to the butter/water mixture. Mix it in progressively and stir the cannabis grounds evenly throughout the mixture. Then simmer the pot or saucepan on low heat for between two and three hours. Be sure that the simmer never comes to a full boil or you’ll lose some of the butter product.

Step 4: Straining the butter

After two or three hours have past, strain your cannabis-infused butter by setting a funnel on top of a jar or bowl. Line up the funnel with a cheesecloth, which should let you strain the fluid through and keep the plant matter from getting into the final butter product.

Let the butter cool for a few minutes, then pour the butter over the cheesecloth and funnel. The straining effect should filter out the butter effectively. DO NOT squeeze the cheesecloth since this could press plant matter through and alter the taste of your resulting cannabis butter. 

Step 5: Refrigerate

Your next step should be to place the jar of butter in the refrigerator for about an hour. This will give the butter a chance to solidify before you use it for any edible products or for spreading on snacks, desserts, and other dishes. 


After the butter has fully solidified, you can keep it in the fridge for at least a few weeks. We’d recommend making fresh cannabis-infused butter about every month if you want maximum freshness and great taste, but your mileage may vary based on the initial butter product you use and the quality of your cannabis.

Unlike regular butter, leaving cannabis-infused butter at room temperature on a butter dish for too long can affect the overall flavor and taste. For this reason, we’d recommend only refrigerating cannabis-infused butter if you want to keep it long-term.

How should you dose cannabutter?

Dosing your cannabis-infused butter is a little tricky, especially since everyone’s preparation process is different. We’d recommend testing the potency of your butter by spreading between one-fourth and one-half of a teaspoon on a snack like a bagel. See how the dose affects you on a weekend day (or just whenever you don’t have any other responsibilities).

You can then come up with a baseline or ballpark estimate for how potent the butter is and use that when making treats or giving the butter to other people.
