How to Make Cannabis Olive Oil (Or Any Oil)

Learn how to make cannabis-infused olive oil

Cannabis olive oil is a staple edible: this one product has dozens of uses, just like cannabutter, but it’s low-fat and dairy-free. The process takes a couple hours, but involves very little action on your part. Just sit back and let your crockpot or slow cooker do all the work. Your end result will be a golden-green, silky smooth nectar from the gods, suitable for use in cooking, baking, or even as a topical. This recipe is so good you can even mix it with a little vinegar and eat it raw on salad– is there anything more Californian than eating a weed salad?

What you’ll need

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • 1 ounce of decarbed cannabis flower

Utensils:

  • 1 crockpot or slow cooker
  • A coffee filter or cheesecloth
  • 1 thermometer suitable for use with food, such as a candy thermometer
  • A glass jar or jars small enough to be submerged in your slow cooker
  • 1 small clean towel you don’t care about

Lay the towel on the bottom of the crockpot’s inner chamber. This will create a soft little bed to nestle your jars so they don’t break, like a mama bird making a nest for her eggs.

Fill the crockpot with enough water to completely submerge the jars with an inch of water on top. Take the jars out of the crockpot (we know you had to put them in to measure, it’s ok) and set the crockpot to high to begin heating the water. Once the temperature of the water reaches 185 F, set the crockpot to low.

While the water bath is heating in the crockpot, prepare the jars. Separate the 2 cups of olive oil evenly among the jars, leaving half an inch of room at the top. Now take your decarbed weed, and evenly disperse it among the jars of oil. Wipe away any mess around the rims, and put the lids on securely but not too tightly. If you screw the lids too tightly, you increase the pressure inside, which could cause the jar to explode when heated. You want it tight enough that water can’t get inside, but not “sweetie, can you give me a hand with this?” tightness.

With the water temp at 185 F and the crockpot set to low, set the jars in the pot, cushioned by the towel. Put the lid on the pot and leave for 2 hours. If your jars float, that’s normal, but you’ll want to weigh them down with something so they don’t knock around.

After two hours, turn off the crockpot and carefully remove the jars from the bath. Set aside until cool enough to handle.

After they’ve cooled, unscrew the jars and pour the oil-flower mixture through your filter or cheesecloth. Capture the cannabis-infused oil in another jar or flask. The remaining pulp can be saved for future uses, or thrown away (it is kind of gross looking).

That’s it, now you’re ready to be a gourmet edible chef!

You can use this oil in any of your Nonna’s Mediterranean recipes: in pasta sauces, on meats, even in an olive oil cake. Or you can use it straight from the bottle, drizzled on pizzas, salads and toasts. Or just rub it all over your naked body and wrestle naked like an Ancient Greek. But if for whatever reason olive oil isn’t your thing…this recipe can be adapted with almost any plant-based oil, such as coconut, sesame or chili.
