The Best Weed-Infused Brownies Recipe

by Emjay

Probably the most popular edible to date, the weed brownie is a favorite for a couple of reasons. One, they’re freakin’ brownies; and two – it makes for an all-around, well-balanced high. You don’t have to be the winner of The Great British Bake-Off to ace these cannabis brownies—our weed-infused brownie recipe’s got you covered.

Now, let’s talk cannabutter.

What is cannabutter?

Cannabutter is by far the most tried-and-true ingredient in making edibles, period. Weed + Butter = Cannabutter. Since it’s so versatile and fairly easy to make, you’ll be off to the cannabis edible races in no time with some homemade cannabis oil.

To successfully make marijuana brownies, you’re first going to need to know how to make infused butter. It isn’t rocket science, but it does require a bit of your time.

If you’re ready to get your feet wet, stick around for a step-by-step guide to crafting your very own cannabutter

Decarb your cannabis to make cannabutter

First things first. You need to prepare your weed beforehand in a process called “decarbing.” To do this, you’re going to need to heat up your marijuana. This helps release the THC, so don’t worry about wasting your stash.

It is very important not to skip this step. If you do, your brownies (or whatever edible you’re making) won’t have the effect you’re looking for. Weed produces a non-toxic acid cannabinoid known as THCA.

Whenever weed is heated up, the THCA gets converted into THC. This is the molecule everyone wants when smoking weed. THC produces feelings of euphoria, happiness, and well-being. As such, decarbing your cannabis for cooking purposes is a crucial element that yields similar effects to smoking.

You may have people tell you that it’s better to decarb your weed directly with the hot butter. But, really, you want your weed to spend as little time soaking in the butter as possible. This plays a big role in the final taste of your cannabutter.

If you allow it to soak for too long, it could potentially ruin the taste of whatever it is you’re making. Below, you will find directions for decarbing your weed in the oven.

Not sure how much weed to use? It’s really up to you. But you want to keep in mind that the more weed that you put into your cannabutter, the more effective it will be. Also, you want to make sure that for every ½-ounce of weed used, you’ll need 1 cup of unsalted butter (salted will work, just adds some… saltiness).

Step 1: Preheat oven to 240° F (240° is not a typo — low heat is our friend here)

Step 2: Take out a baking sheet and line it with parchment or wax paper. Place the weed you’re going to use onto the paper and make sure that it’s spread evenly.

Step 3: When the oven is ready, pop in the baking sheet and let your weed heat up for around 45 minutes.

Step 4: Moving onto the stovetop, place a small pot of water (1 to 2 quarts) over high heat. When the water is getting hot, toss in the sticks of butter and let them melt thoroughly.

Step 5: When 45 minutes are up, take the baking sheet out of the oven and add the weed to the pot of melted butter. Turn down the heat to its lowest setting and let that baby simmer for 2 ½ to 3 ½ hours.

Step 6: When time is up, take the cannabis and set it aside so that it can cool down a bit.

Step 7: With a large bowl, you’re going to need to place a cheesecloth over it and secure it in place using a rubber band.

Step 8: Next, slowly pour the mixture from the pot onto the cheesecloth. The mixture will gradually filter through and into the large bowl below. Remove the cheesecloth along with any remaining weed that got caught in it, and pitch it.

Step 9: Let the large bowl sit for a few, as it needs time to cool down before you stick it into the fridge. Once in the fridge, let it chill for about 45 minutes.

Step 10: Upon removing the large bowl, you should see the mixture has separated into two layers. On top will be a hard, wax-like substance. Below it will be the water. Using a butter knife, gently remove the top layer and rinse off any debris.

You now have your very own cannabutter! And with that, it’s time to get busy making some homemade weed brownies!

Weed Brownies Recipe

Now that you have your cannabis butter made up and ready to use, nothing is holding you back. Cannabutter is the key to marijuana edibles. If you have it on hand, you can make just about anything (assuming you have the other ingredients, of course).

To make pot brownies, you will need the following:

  • ½ cup of unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon baking powder
  • ¾ cup of all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • ½ cup cannabutter
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs

(You can also add other stuff like chocolate chips (semi-sweet or dark chocolate) for a little extra oomph)

Step 1: Preheat the oven to 350 °F.

Step 2: Using an 8 x 8 metal baking pan, apply a light coating of grease to ensure that there is no sticking.

Step 3: Grab a medium-sized bowl and mix together the flour, cocoa powder, salt, and baking powder. We’ll refer to this as the “dry” bowl since it’s all dry ingredients.

Step 4: In a second medium-sized bowl, mix together the cannabutter, white sugar, and brown sugar.  We’ll refer to this one as the “wet” bowl, and really the hunk of your brownie mix.

Step 5: In the wet bowl, add in the eggs and the vanilla extract. Blend them together really well until the color of the mixture begins to lighten a bit.

Step 6: Add the dry bowl of ingredients into the wet bowl of ingredients and mix them all together until everything is smooth.

Step 7: Once smooth, slowly pour the batter into your greased baking pan. Using a spatula, spread the batter around the pan until it is completely level and even.

Step 8: Place the pan in the oven and allow it to bake for 25 to 30 minutes.

Step 9: Now all you have to do is employ the tried-and-true toothpick test. Although it doesn’t have to come out entirely clean, you should make sure that what does come out doesn’t have a batter-like consistency. If it does, simply bake it a little longer and repeat the toothpick test again.

Once the brownies are done, it’s best to set them aside so that they can cool for about 30 minutes. As much as you’ll want to chow down, be patient. Otherwise, you will have a gooey mess on your hands.

Now that the sweet, sweet brownies are done, there’s just one more step: dig in and enjoy the accompanying high. Heck, through some melted chocolate fudge and ice cream on there, too.

Just make sure that you gauge how you’re feeling following the first brownie. Depending on how much marijuana you used in your cannabutter recipe, you could be in for a very potent high. In our experience, we’ve found that little dosing goes a long way.

Take it easy to start and don’t get into a big hurry, especially if it’s your first time. The whole purpose of pot brownies and other cannabis-infused edibles is to relax and take it easy. Your buzz isn’t going anywhere.

Oftentimes, the effects can take anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour to set in. Remember to always listen to your body and understand how you’re reacting to the goodies before having a second helping.

With a little bit of patience and caution, you will be in for a truly enjoyable experience. Be sure to visit our blogs for plenty more recipes and other exciting reads.

Bon appétit, and enjoy the ride.
